Vallis Farm

Chris and Cordelia Smaje are creating a wood, orchard, nuttery, allotment plots and a small market garden for organic fruit and veg. Can be viewed from the footpath that heads off across The Leys from the 'Redrow Towers' towards Vallis Vale (shown in one of pictures)

Broccoli

We have both purple sprouting and white sprouting at Orchard St allotments. The Purple Sprouting is generally regarded as an April crop, but is now available in 3 versions 'Winter', 'Early' (March) and 'Late' (April/May). White Sprouting comes in March. Whichever you decide to grow, you need to sow in April, preferably in a seed bed where they can grow on undisturbed till you need them. A good crop to plant out after lifting early potatoes or early broad beans. The dish illustrated is steamed broccoli, with a cheese sauce, covered with a thin layer of bread-crumbs and grated cheese and baked in oven at 180C. The hens love the leaves too!

The Roman Garden at Upper Row Farm, Hemington, February 2007

[Roman Garden] This small Roman garden was created during the filming of a Time Team television programme in summer 2006. It is still winter at the moment so the garden is a bit sparse. Bath and Camerton Archaeological Society have been investigating the landscape surrounding Upper Row Farm, Hemington for several years. Their discoveries include Iron Age, Roman and Medieval buildings.

Visit to Bath City Farm, January 2007

Bath City Farm is one of the largest City Farms in the country. They keep goats, sheep, and chickens and are hoping to start growing organic vegetables. Thanks to Bath City Farm trustees Sarah and Trish for showing us round on a rather grey and muddy January afternoon.

[Bath City Farm View] Despite the weather the view over Bath is still spectacular. [Bath City Farm Chickens] Feeding the chickens.
[Bath City Farm Soay Sheep] The Soay sheep don't seem to mind the mud! [Bath City Farm Pigsty] But the Tamworth pigs would not venture out of their sties.

Frome Spectacular, December 2006

Food Frome and FROGS members sell spiced local apple juice and roasted chestnuts at the Frome Spectacular. Unfortunately the chestnuts were from China - please send us any suggestions for locally produced chestnuts!
